A letter is being sent out to registered walkers who were planning to participate in the 2020 Island Walk in June to notify them that the event has been postponed.

Dear Walkers,

As Coronavirus becomes a close reality for many of us, our utmost concern is the health and safety of walkers, volunteers and supporters.

In Jersey, like the UK, Europe and elsewhere, businesses and event organisers are taking steps to minimise the risks of contagion by implementing travel bans and cancelling large public and sporting events scheduled for this summer.

Each year, the number of participants involved in the Island Walk exceeds 1,500 people across the entirety of the Island of Jersey. The event is island-wide and the health and well-being of everyone in Jersey is paramount.

Having considered various matters such as government guidance on social distancing and the general forecast that normal life for everyone is unlikely to resume for a number of months, we have taken the decision to postpone the 2020 TMF Island Walk, as scheduled on Saturday, 20th June.

“We are obviously disappointed that the TMF Group Island Walk will be postponed, but the health and well-being of our community is paramount. During this period of uncertainty and restricted movement, stay safe and focus on both your own and your close family’s mental well-being. We look forward to welcoming you on the new date, yet to be confirmed,” (Cengiz Somay, Managing Director, Channel Islands).

We will endeavour to stage the Island Walk later this summer, but it may be necessary to re-schedule it in 2021, please rest assured that we shall communicate any such changes to everyone as far in advance, as possible.

Anyone who is already registered to take part, will automatically be entered into the re-scheduled event; but if any registered walker cannot attend the re-stage event, we could either transfer their entry to a friend or family member who can attend; otherwise, we would issue a refund of the entry fee.

As a charity fundraising event, we hold everyone’s sponsorship and fundraising on trust each year before distributing this money to the charities in September. The trustees of the Around the Island Walk Trust, will continue to hold such funds raised so far in 2020 and will consider next steps about issuing refunds or retaining fundraising and rolling over into 2021.

It is the intention that the chosen charities for 2020 will remain the same if the event is postponed into 2021.

We wish everyone the very best of health and shall keep our fingers crossed!
