Garenne Group holds careers fair "to dispel myths" about construction

Friday 23 March 2018

The Garenne Group is to hold a careers fair to help dispel any myths about construction and encourage school leavers to consider careers in the field.

Garenne’s trading business - Camerons, Geomarine, AFM, Granite Le Pelley and Rabeys - as well as Highlands College and Skills Jersey will all be there.

Marc Burton, CEO of the Garenne Group in the Channel Islands, said they would like to have school leavers and undergraduates consider looking at the options available within their companies.

Over 100 different types of careers are available from the traditional building and site-based roles with modern day apprenticeships to management training positions for roles such as quantity surveying and construction management. Careers in office administration and human resources are also available along with plumbers, mechanics and electricians. There are also the more unusual deep sea divers or engineers hanging off rocks on ropes. Visitors at the fair will be able to learn more about the different careers.

Mr Burton added: "We have a proven track record of investing in the future of the construction industry and ultimately in the infrastructure on Jersey and wish to continue this investment as part of our resource strategy for a busy pipeline of work ahead. There is a real pride within our staff across the Group when they are involved in a building or engineering project and we’d really like to present that to anyone who is looking to start out on their career or that are looking for a change.

"We’d also like to dispel the myth of what working in construction entails and show that there are some really great options available to school leavers, undergraduates or people that have transferable skills. You can study and gain a worldwide recognised qualification whilst working which means gaining valuable experience and being paid.”

The careers fair takes place on 28 March between 12:00 and 18:00 at the International Finance Centre Building 1.
