New Master’s degree programme available in Jersey

Friday 27 May 2016

Jersey International Business School (JIBS) has launched a Master’s in International Financial Services, awarded by the University of Buckingham, which is the first Master’s by research degree to be delivered in Jersey.

Students will acquire specialist knowledge in an area of financial services of particular interest to them, while also benefiting from extensive research training.

In order to meet the local finance industry’s need for more professionals to acquire the financial services and management skills that are required to keep Jersey competitive, the JIBS University Centre now offers an MSc International Financial Services (by Research) degree aimed at professionals wishing to gain an advanced Level 7 qualification.

The new research Master’s, which will commence in October 2016, is studied part-time over two years, allowing students to fit their study and research around work and home commitments.

Students will choose a study pathway that suits their own educational and professional aspirations. Study pathways include areas such as financial crime prevention; governance, risk and compliance (GRC); management within financial services; wealth management; Trust and Company Management; or Funds.

Students will have unlimited access to the Business School’s range of CPD seminars and events during the course of the Master’s, which will allow them to undertake their mandatory CPD whilst they develop their body of work.

In addition, the University Centre will host regular Academic Dinners for Master’s students. These will comprise seminars on financial services, delivered by leading academic authorities and practitioners, followed by dinner. The Dinners will support learning and subject matter research in order to further develop understanding.

“In the globally competitive financial services industry, the demand for skilled practitioners who have a deep understanding of the key issues within financial services is a well-known challenge,” says Chief Executive Officer Chris Usher.

“Our Master’s students will develop research and analytical skills and the ability to think critically and creatively, and deal with ethical problems and challenges. They will graduate equipped to apply theory and knowledge in the post-crisis financial services industry.

“This new addition to the University Centre offering reflects our commitment to further education in the Island. In recognition of this need for innovation and excellence in financial services, our mission is to build a world-class master’s programme that leverages the intellectual resources of the Island, is based on cutting-edge research, and, as a result, attracts the very best applicants.”

Interested students should already hold a first degree, or have a relevant professional qualification with a minimum of three years’ work experience. Tuition fees for the two-year programme are £10,950.
