Waitrose continues support of local sport

Friday 20 November 2015

The three Waitrose branches in Jersey have raised £3,518 for local sports teams through the Community Matters Scheme.

Every month each Waitrose branch donates £1,000 to three local good causes. Customers vote for the share each charity or project receives using green tokens.

Throughout 2015, 13 of the NatWest Island Games sports teams were featured in the branches Community Matters boxes.

Across the St Saviour, Red Houses and St Helier branches, cheques have been presented to the badminton, sailing, triathlon, junior golf, volleyball, basketball, cycling, shooting, table tennis, tennis, archery, football and swimming teams.

Duncan Langston, manager of Waitrose St Saviour, said:  “Waitrose was hugely supportive of the NatWest Island Games and this was one of the ways that we wanted to help continue the Games’ legacy.

“The green token scheme is an excellent opportunity for our customers to choose how they want us to contribute to the local community so we ask everyone to support local sport with their green token.”

Waitrose’s support of the Games and its legacy also included its sponsorship of the Waitrose Games Makers, who aided the smooth running of the inter-island competition, and its recent sponsorship of the Girls Football Development Programme, inspired by gold-medalist and partner Marta Ascuncao who was part of the Jersey Women’s Football team, using the profits from Games’ merchandise.

Since Waitrose opened five branches in the Channel Islands (two in Guernsey and three in Jersey) in 2011 nearly £275k has been donated to local charities and more than £14m has been donated between 50,000 causes nationwide since the scheme launched in 2008.
