Walkers commits to diversity and inclusion

Thursday 27 August 2020

Walkers has signed an IoD commitment to improving its diversity and inclusion.

The law firm says that its decision to sign the statement of support for the 'Institute of Directors' Diversity and Inclusion 2020 Vision Statement' shows its intention to collaborate with the local branch of the IoD in creating a Diversity and Inclusion Leadership Charter, which will set out measurable goals and action.

The aim of the Charter will be to create and maintain diverse workforces that are respectful and encouraging of differences in background or perspective.

Walkers has already created a CI Diversity and Inclusion Committee, which is chaired by partner Alexandra Corner.

That committee has since put in place unconscious bias training for all Channel Islands employees. Those sessions will be led by senior counsel and discrimination law specialist Sarah Ash.

"We anticipate that the Diversity and Inclusion Leadership Charter will be an effective and considered framework for organisations of all kinds to embrace D&I principles in a practical and meaningful way and we look forward to working with the IoD and other businesses to create that Charter," Ms Corner commented.

Partner Jonathan Heaney, who leads Walkers' Jersey office, added: "At a point at which we're growing so rapidly and recruiting so widely, signing up to the IoD 2020 Vision Statement not only demonstrates our commitment to valuing and living D&I principles to our team, it also ensure that these points are front-of-mind as we continue to expand."
