One of the most vociferous critics of Jersey’s financial services industry has produced a video listing the ‘top-ten most secretive tax havens’ – which leaves Jersey out of the running.
The Guardian has based its video on the Tax Justice Network’s ‘Financial Secrecy Index’ for 2015, which has Jersey in 16th place – behind some global giants rarely afforded tax haven status, such as Germany, the UK, USA and Japan.
Like the Muratti, Guernsey is one behind Jersey - in 17th place - while the BVI, which has been mentioned heavily in the Panama Papers, is 21st. The Isle of Man is back in 31st place nestling between France and Liberia.
The Tax Justice Network, led by Jerseyman John Christensen, says its index ranks jurisdictions according to their secrecy and the scale of their offshore financial activities.
It adds that Jersey has dropped out of the top ten – the Island was ninth in the 2013 rankings – because it has signed up to numerous bilateral information exchange agreements and tax conventions.
