MEDIA RELEASE: The views expressed in this article are those of the author and not Bailiwick Express

JAYF (Jersey Association for Youth and Friendship) is delighted to announce the opening of the gardens at Oaklands in St Peter on Sunday 12th September by kind permission of the owners. This represents the grand finale of what has been a fabulous Open Garden programme.

Originally farmland, Oaklands is a rambling garden where Jersey cows once grazed surrounded by beds containing many specimen shrubs. Highlights include a collection of camellias imported from Cornwall, a large pond area and extensive woodland. Trees include silver birch, acers and what is reputed to be Jersey’s largest walnut. An informal and natural feel prevails throughout. A further highlight is the well-stocked kitchen garden which keeps the family self-sufficient in fruit and veg.

Oaklands will be open from 2pm until 5pm. There will be a one-way system in operation with signposts at nearby junctions. JAYF’s delicious Cream Teas with Jersey cream donated by Fungi Delecti and milk from Jersey Dairy will be served on the terrace and there will be a Tombola. A guided ‘Walk and Talk’ will be led by Neil and Alli Singleton of Birding (Jersey) to further enhance visitors’ experience.

Entrance costs £5; children under 12 free. Regret no dogs. All proceeds go towards JAYF which supports independent living in four hostels on the island for vulnerable young people.

JAYF are enormously grateful to Aztec Group for its continued support of the Open Garden scheme.
