The recipients of the 2017 Butterfield Guernsey student bursaries have been announced.

Laura Cashin, 18, and Dominic Wainwright, 19, have been awarded bursaries from the annual scheme, which provides financial support and work experience to two local students during their university studies.

Miss Cashin attended the Grammar School and sixth form centre, where she studied History, PE and English A-Levels – securing a place at Loughborough University to study English. Former Elizabeth College student Dominic Wainwright will be studying Mathematics at the University of Portsmouth after taking A-Levels in Maths, Psychology and Physics.

Both students said they applied to the Butterfield bursary scheme because of the work experience opportunities it offered during university holidays, as well as the financial support. The bursary offers local students a minimum of 10 weeks of paid work experience with the Bank as well as financial support of £2,100 annually during a three-year degree course.

‘I hope it will enable me to gain an idea for the sort of career I would like to pursue in future. I am not entirely set on anything at the moment, but I have a few ideas which include doing a Law conversion after my degree and then looking into Sports Law,’ said Laura.

She added: ‘I have also considered teaching and working in finance, whether that be returning to Guernsey, in the UK or abroad.’

Dominic said he was also considering the finance industry or teaching as a future career path, adding: ‘In addition to the work experience, the bursary will also support me financially. This will help me to cope with the many costs of university, such as accommodation.

‘I am really looking forward to working with Butterfield during university holidays, and can hopefully apply the mathematics that I have learned to my work experience.’

Kim Reece-Sheerin, Butterfield’s Human Resources Senior Manager, said: ‘Laura and Dominic are to be congratulated for winning the bursaries. The quality of applications is always high for Butterfield’s annual bursary scheme, which was established to support local talent. We’re looking forward to them being part of the team during university holidays.’
