£1,500 raised to help family that “lost everything” in fire

Tuesday 18 January 2022

More than £1,500 has been raised for a family of four trying to rebuild their lives after a fire destroyed their home and possessions.

The blaze at the family’s Bellozanne Valley-based home occurred over the weekend, believed to have started in an airing cupboard.

Jersey Fire and Rescue said in the wake of the blaze that the parents, two young girls and kitten were lucky, with a fire alarm installed in the property having "undoubtedly saved their lives".

However, while the family escaped without injury, they sadly "lost everything" they owned.

To help them rebuild, family friend and owner of Cheias de Charme Nails and Beauty Lisa de Sousa started an online collection.

Promoting it on Facebook, she explained that "everything that didn't get damaged by the fire got damaged by the water to fight the fire and also by the smoke."

She added that the mother is "one of my dear staff members and has such a caring heart and I would like to ask everyone to please help her family... please let's help them start over again."

Within a matter of hours, more than £1,000 had been raised, with the total standing around £1,500 at the time of writing.

Islanders have also been offering furniture, clothing and toys to assist them.
