ART FIX: New plan to fill empty seats in local theatre

Friday 18 August 2023

A local theatre school is using its upcoming show to launch a new initiative which hopes to fill empty seats and "give back to young people".

Every weekend, Express presents a selection of exhibitions, performances, workshops, events and other historic, creative and delicious content to help islanders get their weekly dose of culture.

Here's this week's offering...

Welcome to the 'House of Fun'

The Theatre Workshop Jersey is once again about to embark on its summer production, featuring 23 students who have given up their summer break to learn a full musical in just ten days.

This year's performance is 'Our House', a musical based on the songs of the hit band ‘Madness’.

Set in Camden Town, this hilarious and evocative musical tells the story of London boy, Joe Casey.

Two parallel stories unfold and hurtle towards the explosive climax as one quick decision of sixteen-year-old Joe changes his life and the lives of those around him.

Does his choice lead him into a life of crime, or will he do the right thing? Does he turn his back on his home, family, the girl he loves and all that is dear to him, or will love, loyalty, and a sense of community win out?

This heart-warming comedy musical is accompanied by all the iconic Madness tunes, including Embarrassment, Baggy Trousers, It Must Be Love, House of Fun, Driving in My Car, Night Boat to Cairo, and many more.

Our House is being staged at Haute Vallée school theatre, with five shows across 18-21 August.

Tickets can be booked online.

Empty seat initiative

As part of their 'Our House' shows, TTW Jersey is launching its ‘Empty Seat Initiative’ which hopes to "give back to young people" by offering free and reduced price tickets to islanders who may not usually be able to afford to go to the theatre.

Creative Director of TTW, Scott Livingstone explained: "No production ever goes on in reality without some empty seats. We have taken it upon ourselves to use those seats to be able to give back to young people here in Jersey and offer people who wouldn’t be able to afford to attend the theatre the opportunity to go and watch full scale productions.

"Theatre can be eye-opening, inspiring and is an experience that should be accessible to all. The cost of putting on full scale productions has grown incredibly and of course naturally with that ticket prices have had to rise. That being said that shouldn’t make theatre an ‘elitist’ experience, with the Globe and Royal Shakespeare offering tickets at discounted prices, so should Jersey."

He continued: "We encourage all local producers of theatre and events to join this initiative and to welcome everyone to the exciting world of theatre.

"We would like to launch this by inviting ANYONE who wishes to experience our production of Our House a £5 ticket to the matinee’s on Saturday and Sunday OR if needed a completely FREE ticket. This will be open to anyone under 18 and one parent/guardian. This is not to be means tested and will be purely based on good will."

Pre-Pride party

Following the success of their One Love LGBTQ+ event earlier this year, a group of friends have organised a 'Pre-Pride' event at Ce Soir this Saturday.

The group's 'One Love' event in May to celebrated "all things love" and was one of Rojos' busiest night of the year.

The group were "thrilled" and "so happy" with the success, which they hope to replicated at their Pre-Pride party this weekend.

The venue will be decorated 'pride-style' with two rooms full of entertainment, including drag queens, until 01:00.

This is a free event for the community and everyone is welcome.

People we love

ArtHouse Jersey is looking for islanders to take part in an emotive art installation, People We Love, as part of an immersive exhibition exploring human connections.

'People We Love' is a community-based, international touring artwork where individuals are filmed looking at images of people they love.

In this Jersey edition, ArtHouse Jersey is inviting islanders to take part in this beautiful and timely artwork that centres around the emotion that bonds us all: love.

Guided by an audio meditation, each participant will be filmed gazing at a picture of someone they love – a picture the audience will never see.

Filming takes place at St Helier Town Church during various time slots from Wednesday 13 September to Sunday 17 September 2023.

The footage will be used in People We Love as part of the Skipton Big Ideas: Human Connections exhibition which opens to the public on Friday 3 November 2023.

You can book your filming slot via Eventbrite.

Upcoming exhibition 'No Place Like Home' is set to explore the concept of ‘home’ with an exhibition of newly commissioned works that will be shown in and outside of its gallery space.

No Place Like Home features the work of local and internationally acclaimed artists and invites islanders to consider their ‘home’ on a personal, national, global and even cosmic scale.

Launching at ArtHouse Jersey at Capital House with a special celebration event on Tuesday 5 September, the show will officially open from Wednesday 6 September and run until 15 October.

The exhibition features 23 gallery-based artworks and three external installation pieces, all of which explore ‘home’ from the micro to the macro, including considerations around Jersey’s housing crisis and international perspectives of the health of our planet. Whilst we live in a time when this can be a complex and serious subject, the pieces on display are often playful and interactive and invite the viewer to reflect on their own interpretation and experience.
