Your refuse will be refused!

Monday 17 November 2014

Binmen could refuse to pick up your rubbish if you’re throwing away things that can’t be burned in the Island’s incinerator.

Over the last few months Islanders have been chucking out all sorts from old bicycles and patio furniture to BBQ’s and even old vehicle parts – stuff that has been damaging the machinery at the plant.

Transport and Technical Services are now working with the parishes and customers who deliver waste and are urging them to refuse the wrong refuse.

They are also carrying out random checks on loads as they arrive at the Incinerator to make sure they are full of the right rubbish – those that aren’t will have to be sorted or Islanders will have to pay to get it sorted for them.

Assistant Director of Solid Waste for TTS Richard Fauvel said: “We have ways of disposing of all types of waste, but it is important that the correct methods are used.

“The EFW is there for non-recyclable waste that can be burnt and provide energy that is fed into the Island’s energy supply. Not only does non-burnable waste not provide energy but it can cause damage and prematurely age the EfW equipment. We have to take action to minimise this risk.”
