Cancer Research calls on women to join its pink army to fight cancer

Sunday 13 May 2018

Local women are being urged to put on their trainers and pink leggings to join Cancer Research UK’s Race for Life on 27 May at Les Jardins de la Mer.

Hundreds of women have already signed up to take part in the 5k and 10k events to help raise funds for the charity, which aims to crack down on 200 types of cancer through vital research.

Money raised will help Cancer Research UK scientists find new ways to prevent, diagnose and treat the disease, helping save more lives.

Jenny Ainsworth, Event Manager for Race for Life in Jersey, said: “Every day, people are diagnosed with cancer. Now is the time to commit to Race for Life, join like-minded ladies at the start line and make a real difference in the fight against the disease.

“By taking part and raising money, our participants will play a crucial role in helping to turn discoveries made in the lab into new, better treatments for patients in Jersey and across the UK. That’s why every step, every person and every penny raised counts. Our aim is that one day everyone will beat cancer. The more women who Race for Life, the sooner we can help that day come. We are urging women in Jersey to sign up right now and show their support.”

One in two people in the UK will be diagnosed with cancer at some stage in their lives, but the good news is more people are surviving the disease now than ever before. Cancer survival in the UK has doubled since the early 1970s and Cancer Research UK’s work has been at the heart of that progress. The latest statistics in Jersey predict that cancer cases could rise by 44% by 2037

Ms Ainsworth added: “Cancer is a disease that affects us all in some way. By taking part in Race for Life, people can come together to remember loved ones lost to cancer or celebrate the lives of those dear to them who have survived. By raising money, participants can also support Cancer Research UK scientists to make vital strides forward in research, helping more men, women and children survive the disease.”

With less than two weeks to go before entry closes on 25 May, local women are invited to sign up right now
