Football fan friends bring back charity five-a-side tournament

Monday 20 March 2023

A pair of football fan friends are bringing back their charity five-a-side football tournament after raising nearly £10,000 for Ukraine last year - with this year's contest set to be in aid of a local disability charity.

The organisers are hoping to gather 20 five-a-side teams from businesses across the island to 'Kick On for Les Amis' in May.

Tom Stead, the Managing Director of Worksafe Jersey, and Jonny Seller, Co-founder and Director of iPop, organised a kick-about to raise money for Ukraine last year. They managed to raise a total of £9,500 — all of which was donated to the Red Cross.

Tom said: "Me and Jonny went to school together and we both love our football. He's a Leeds fan and I'm Tottenham. So, last year when we saw what was happening in Ukraine, we thought that instead of sitting about, we would do what we can to help."

This year, Tom and Jonny are hoping to raise £10,000 for Les Amis, a local charity that provides services to support people with learning disabilities or associated conditions to gain equal opportunities.

They said: "This year we wanted to keep it local, we think [Les Amis] do fantastic work."

The tournament will take place at Les Quennevais School, who are kindly providing access to their facilities for the second year running, and will see 20 corporate teams play against each other.

After a live draw, the teams will be spilt up into four groups of five. The teams will face off in 10 minute matches, with a five minute break in between each. There will be two matches running simultaneously at all times.

18 teams have signed up so far, leaving two available slots for any other interested businesses.

Those signed up so far include Viberts, Dandara, Standard Bank, Pentagon, and Rok — who will be returning to defend their title after winning last-year's Ukraine tournament.
