Covid cases rise 55% over weekend

Monday 05 July 2021

The number of islanders with covid has risen by 55% over the weekend to 572, with two people now in hospital.

According to the latest statistics, 210 new cases were identified over the weekend: 97 people were seeking healthcare, 78 were contact traced, 14 were inbound travellers, 17 were identified via workforce screening, two via admissions screening, and two via cohort screening.

410 people are showing symptoms and 161 people are not.

4,419 people are direct contacts of those covid cases - and, as of yesterday, are now allowed to avoid isolation, so long as they agree to be tested and do not return a positive result.

Despite glitches with the testing results delivery system over the weekend, the average turnaround time is 7.7hours.

Also released this afternoon were Friday's school statistics.

As of Friday 2 July, there were 29 confirmed cases of the virus in schools: 10 pupils at Beaulieu, seven pupils at Jersey College for Girls, seven pupils at Trinity, one pupil at Victoria College Prep, one pupil at De La Salle, and a single member of staff at St. Saviour, Granville and Beaulieu.

In the past two weeks, 82 pupils have tested positive for covid and nine staff - of those, 53 students tested positive last week alone, and seven staff.

The school statistics for the weekend will be released tomorrow.

Sharing the latest statistics, the Government said it had "expected to see" the rise in cases.

It added: "The vaccination programme has fully vaccinated 61% of those aged 18 and over and we have seen a low risk of severe illness and hospitalisation, which shows a significant level of protection in the community."
