'Covid command rooms' provide real-time data

'Covid command rooms' with real-time data on patient numbers and equipment stock are among the tech improvements introduced by Jersey's Digital Health team to sharpen the island's pandemic response.

The team works across Health and Community Services (HCS) within the Government of Jersey to ensure islanders, as patients, benefit from digital technology.

During the pandemic, the digital team set up ‘Covid command rooms’ to provide real-time data on patient numbers, equipment stock and island-wide bed use. 

The team worked with the Allan Lab, a health technology research laboratory in Jersey, to create the new data platform, which gives a ‘minute-by-minute visualisation’ of the situation of the hospital.

Dr Austin Gibbs, director of the Allan Lab, said: “The platform is being extended to include information about the whole island of Jersey, allowing us to be proactive and get to the right people in the right place at the right time.”

Alongside the ‘command rooms’, the digital team has also introduced new external software that enables healthcare workers to access clinical data anywhere in the island, as part of a project called ‘Healthcare Anywhere’.

Dr Andrew Mitchell, Consultant Cardiologist and Chief Clinical Information Officer for Jersey, said: “These digital solutions have and will continue to transform the way we deliver healthcare in Jersey and has been especially useful for clinicians in isolation.”

Other key digital projects include a new in-house communication tool, and custom-built computer equipment at the Urgent Treatment Centre, both of which enable health workers to use video meetings to maintain physical distances and reduce movement around the hospital.

Bernie Morrin, Head of HCS Digital Delivery, said: “Without doubt the lessons learnt from covid demonstrates just how critical the use of digital technologies and integrated communications are to delivering modern health and community care.”
