Plan to convert potato field into doggy day care shelter

Sunday 12 February 2023

The owner of a dog-walking and day care service has put forward plans to transform a potato field into a shelter where pups can "safely exercise while socialising and being mentally stimulated".

If planning approval is granted, the shelter would be in a field known as La Robeline on Rue des Hougues in St. Ouen, according to applicant Kumiko Orlandini, who runs Koko's Canines.

According to Ms Orlandini, five members of staff are tasked with caring for about 50 dogs each week, with the business operating between 10:00 and 14:00.

Ms Orlandini stated that she wants to operate the business in La Robeline field, which is currently agricultural land. She said the field had been owned by the family since 1944, and has been used for growing potatoes.

However, Ms Orlandini wants to change its use from agriculture to 'dog care business' and construct a shed to the south of the site.

"The shelter is needed rain and shine. The field is used to allow the dogs to safely exercise while socialising and being mentally stimulated.

"Without the shelter we would not be able to run," Ms Orlandini wrote. "Given the companionship given by dogs and the value of the exercise owners have through walking them, like equine livery, rural-based dog-walking businesses should also benefit."

The application - which has been graded 'Major' - remains before Planning and a decision will be taken at a later date.
