The launch of a new digital ID available on more devices than the current provider has been further delayed as work continues to ensure it is secure and easy to use.
The new system, which is being developed by Jersey Post with its digital regulatory wing, Vaiie, was originally due to be launched by the end of June 2021.
In mid-August 2021, the Government announced the launch had been delayed after “rigorous testing” of the digital ID software raised the need to develop in-person support to supplement the online system.
The Government confirmed earlier this week they were still working on an alternative digital ID solution.
“This is taking longer than originally expected, however we need to ensure that the solution is secure and is easy to use for those who either don’t have a smartphone or who do not want to use Yoti,” a spokesperson said.
The free app aimed to replace the need to carry around multiple ID documents by securely storing all user information in one place, protected by both facial recognition and a pincode.
Islanders were able to complete a digital tax return for the first time in 2020 using Yoti.
The new digital ID solution was developed in addition to Yoti to make it accessible on more devices. Yoti is only available via an app on smartphones whereas the new solution will be available on laptops, desktop computers or iPads.
Islanders will not have to set up the new digital ID solution as they’ll be able to continue to use their existing Yoti account.
