A ‘Grand’ send-off has been organised today for a beloved local concierge of nearly 40 years, after he passed away following a short illness.
The “familiar smiling face” of the Grand Hotel and Spa, Hugo de Castro, died on 25 January aged 57.
Over the years, the concierge’s attention to detail and willingness to go the extra mile was appreciated by the guests but also recognised by his admission into the French Crossed Keys Society, an exclusive fraternity of Concierges, as well as the title of Concierge of the Year, awarded by Boutique Hotelier magazine in 2017.

Following his death, loved ones, colleagues and former guests paid tribute to his warm and welcoming spirit.
His funeral is due to be held this afternoon at 13:15 at the Crematorium.
Ahead of that, former colleagues have organised a special tribute.
On its way to the chapel, Mr de Castro’s hearse will pass before the Grand steps where he spent so many years before heading off to the service.
Staff will be standing outside to say their farewells to the icon of the Grand.
