Work is about to start on a new warehouse which the Harbour authorities say will significantly reduce traffic disruption.
The publicly-owned Ports of Jersey is spending £1.3 million on enabling works to allow FerrySpeed to build their new warehouse to be built opposite the main Condor Logistics Warehouse on the road leading to the ferry terminal. Brenwal won the tender to carry out the work.
Planning permission for the development was granted in 2011, and the enabling works will be completed by May – allowing the two-year construction project to start at the end of the year.
Moving FerrySpeed across from the New North Quay will reduce the number of large vehicles going through the underpass by around 50 per day, and will make the area around Maritime Museum and the skate park safer, say the Ports of Jersey.
No decisions have been made about what will happen to FerrySpeed’s current site.
Group Commercial Director for Ports of Jersey Myra Shacklady said: “Freight shipping is vital to the Island’s economy and we must ensure that the operations and facilities we provide continue to be of the highest standards.
“Furthermore, we firmly believe this new warehouse area will not only bring significant efficiencies in terms of speed and logistics for the operators involved, but also improve the safety of the surrounding environment by dramatically reducing truck movements along what is already a busy road.”
