Islanders encouraged to get involved with #LoveNature Festival

Saturday 26 May 2018

The National Trust for Jersey is showcasing the island’s rich flora and fauna this weekend and is encouraging people to discover the great outdoors.

It’s the second time the trust has held the #LoveNature Festival, and it says this year’s five-day event which started on Thursday is much more ambitious than last year’s.

There’s an action-packed series of events and many of them are free.

At 10:30 today there’s a ‘behind the scenes’ two-and-a-half hour walk around the Wetland Centre at St Ouen with Ranger Will Kirby. Weather permitting visitors will also get to find out more about bird ringing. Still with birds, and at 11:00, again from the Wetland Centre, you can go ‘twitching’ with Neil Singleton and Alli Caldeira. And at 14:30 Neil and Alli will be giving a talk on the importance of looking after our garden birds. And if you really fancy doing something really different there’s a Wild Food Forage with Kazz Padidar. It starts from the car park near Kempt Tower at 14:00 and tickets are £10 for adults, and £5 for children.

Saturday also sees two firsts. A painting masterclass is being held in the Orchid Fields. Numbers are limited to 12 and tickets cost £25. And in the evening an environmental film - Tawa- - A Voice from the Forest, is being shown at the Frances Le Sueur Centre. It starts at 19:00 and tickets cost £10.

Amongst Sunday’s highlights are a Rock Pool Ramble for Adults with Bob Tomkins starting from La Saline Car Park at 11:00; a chance to experience the Orchid Field – Le Noir Pre – with botanist Anne Hayden at 14:00; and a Bat Walk at Sunset starting at the car park next to Big Vern’s at 20:30.

There are two events planned for Bank Holiday Monday – Come Dine With Bee, from 10:00 at the Frances Le Sueur Centre, where you can find out more about bees; and Hop to It – Pond Dipping aimed for those aged 4-11, at 14:00.

The festival is being funded by Jersey Electricity and Jersey Electricity CEO, Chris Ambler, said: “The #LoveNature Festival is a true celebration of everything the Trust stands for and we want to see protected. It encourages all of us to take a little time out to appreciate the good things this Island offers naturally. We look forward to being involved and supporting the Trust’s work for years to come.”
