Islanders urged to light candles for construction worker in critical condition

Thursday 11 February 2021

Friends and family of a construction worker in critical condition after falling from a collapsing scaffold are urging islanders to light a candle for him this weekend.

Filipe Abreu (36), whose loved ones currently describe as "fighting for his life" in Southampton Hospital, fell from a platform at the Ann Street residential development construction site last week.

While no arrests were made at the time, the Health and Safety Inspectorate launched an investigation in response.

They are now urging islanders to take part in a '#PrayForFilipe' event on Sunday at 19:00.

"On behalf of Filipe, his family and friends, we ask that you join us in saying a prayer and lighting a candle for Jose at 7pm Sunday 14th February, online, for us as an island to come together and show our support to the family at this hard time," Beanina Carsta wrote in a post shared hundreds of times on Facebook.

Since the event was created last night, more than 370 people have pledged to join in.

It's the second major show of support for Mr Abreu and his family.

Richard Long, who does not know him personally, decided to set up £1,000 fundraiser to help the family.

"I do not know the gentleman who fell from scaffolding today however, money is always needed at times like this. Anything you can kindly give will be sent directly to the family. Thank you," he wrote on his JustGiving page.

The target was smashed in less than 24 hours, with the current total standing at £5,800 at the time of writing. 172 people have donated.
