My favourite project: Murals, mates and a Super 8

Wednesday 29 December 2021

A local artist who explored his creativity with a Super 8 camera and provocative collages inspired by 80s Italian ads found himself filming others at work this year as part of a mural project involving local creatives and schools.

Jake Mullins started 2021 by showing his work for the first time at Common Ground, a café based at Red Houses, as part of a partnership with local collective RampArts Jersey.

After having mostly stopped doing art before joining university, Jake tapped into his creativity once more last year during lockdown.

Bored whilst studying for his exams at university, he bought a Super 8 camera and started playing with it.

He also started making collages using Italian photo magazines from the 80s which he had bought to use as inspiration for his Creative Advertising and Marketing courses.

Following his first exhibition at Common Ground, Jake worked with Ramp'Arts to capture the collective's mural series, which includes a refresh of the Rice Bowl mural and revamped bus shelters in Grouville.

The finished movie was first presented at a premier at the Salvation Army in November and released on social media earlier this month.

"The project started in May and lasted through until August," Jake said.

"The film features Jacques Le Breton, Christy King, Rosie Evans, Jonny Swift, and Tania Pita repainting some east side classics. I covered the repainting of Grouville Bus Station, Pontac Bus Station and The Rice Bowl bunker.

"It's great to look back at a busy year with friends!"
