“Not bad for a tough old mare.”

With £5,000 up or grabs to the winner, it was a high class battle for Jersey’s biggest ever prize money and favourite Jazzy Lady took the honours with a gutsy display over two and a quarter miles.

Jazzy Lady and Fourni galloped clear of the rest of the five-horse field in the Fir Pine Development Hurdle Series Handicap Final and it was neck and neck going to the final fence. Jazzy Lady hit the hurdle hard, but her extra class told in the end as Lucy Gardner steered her to a victory by three lengths over Fourni, gallantly ridden by Mattie Batchelor.

Jazzy Lady jockey Lucy Gardner said: “She has loads and loads of heart and that was a really tough race out there. She’s not bad for a tough old mare.

“Going into the last I could see it was going to be a two-horse finish and she was determined to give it her best shot. She had a bit of a bad landing at the last but she is as hard as nails and she came through in the end. It was a thrilling race to be in and great fun.”

The rest of the field were blitzed by the pace with highly-fancied Cahill and Hawaiian Freeze, winner of the Clarendon earlier this season, unable to keep with the front two. Four led from the front from the halfway stage, but Jazzy Lady underlined her class to snatch a gutsy victory. Pictured below are Jazzy's Lady's owners.

In the first race Country Blue was only ever playing second fiddle to hot favourite George Baker-trained Mendacious Harpy, who won by four lengths. Country Blue was named Jersey’s Horse of the year after accumulating more finishing ‘points’ than any other this season at Les Landes. His nearest rival Pas D’Action, was a non-runner.

The second race was won by a distance by Black Knoght, Jersey’s highest rated horse. Black Knight was coming back from injury so was expected to struggle to keep off favourite Aqua Ardens, but Philip Prince steered the horse perfectly to win with ease. The ever-popular Fast Freddie, ridden by Nora Looby, was retired after the race.
