Students from Jersey College Preparatory School and Victoria College will represent the island at the Channel Islands final of a challenge which aims to "showcase the brightest young minds".

Following their success in the Jersey round of de Putron Challenge, Year 6 students from JCP and Year 8 students from Vic will go up against the winners of the Guernsey heat later this month.

The winning Guernsey schools will travel over to Jersey to take part.

The de Putron Challenge aims to showcase the brightest young minds across the Channel Islands by bringing together Year 6 and Year 8 pupils to test their general knowledge, maths and creative thinking skills.

At the Jersey heat – which took place on Thursday 22 February – the Channel Island Group of Professional Engineers provided an exciting STEM challenge which was the first task both year groups undertook.

This round saw teams create catapults out of wooden lolly sticks, rubber bands and a spoon.

In the Year 6 competition, JCP emerged victorious with Trinity School in second place – only one point behind.

The other schools that made it to the final were FCJ Primary School, Bel Royal Primary School, La Moye Primary School and St George’s Preparatory School.

It was a closely contested final for the Year 8 students, with Victoria College winning with 14 points and St Michael’s Preparatory School coming second with 13 points.

Grouville, St Michael’s Preparatory School and Les Quennevais also made it to the Year 8 final.

Every student that took part received a book voucher, and the teams that came first and second place took home money for their schools.

Hayley de Putron, a trustee of the Ana Leaf Foundation and founder of the de Putron Challenge, said: “Congratulations to Jersey College Preparatory School and Victoria College for winning the challenges in their respective year groups.

"Every year I am consistently amazed by the depth of knowledge displayed by our young islanders.

"Every team gave their all today, and I trust that their peers and fellow competitors all gained valuable insights and lessons from this experience.”

The Guernsey challenge is set to take place on Tuesday 12 March, and the inter-island final will be held at The Royal Jersey Showground on Thursday 21 March.
