Muratti magic and Siam spice at inter-island school quiz battle

It may have been less physical than the annual encounters for the Muratti Trophy, or Siam Cup, but the finals of the De Putron Challenge delivered inter-island rivalry that was just as tense and keenly-contested.

After a tense day's quizzing against rivals from Guernsey, St. Michael's Prep brought silverware back to Jersey as the winners of the year 8 final of the annual event, while the other visiting team, Plat Douet, lost out narrowly in the year 6 encounter.

The final battles marked the climax of the 2023 event, which attracted 52 schools and began with heats in both islands earlier this month.

The Archangels team representing St. Michael's took an early lead in their final against the 'EC Eagles' team from Sarnian rivals Elizabeth College.

With rounds based on the theme of 'It's Time', including general knowledge, a mathematical section and a set of questions based on the environment, the Jersey trio – Ben Carnegie-Bedlow, Isaac Weston and Georgina Drummond – pulled further ahead as the competition progressed and eventually won 29-17.

In the year 6 final earlier in the day, the Plat Douet team of Lara De Sousa, Joy Jefferson and Zain Hadjam were neck-and-neck with their opponents from Guernsey's Vauvert Primary School, but during the final round the visitors slipped just behind and were beaten 33-28.

Classmates and relatives of the Jersey teams were able to tune in live to the final, which was streamed live from Les Cotils hotel and saw BBC journalist John Fernandez take the role of quizmaster.

Hayley de Putron, a trustee of the Ana Leaf Foundation, sponsor of the event, and founder of the de Putron Challenge, said: "Congratulations to Vauvert and St Michael’s for winning the inter-island final in their respective year groups.

"The teams did so well and everyone who took part should be very proud of themselves."
