Jersey's big screen festival returns "bigger and better" than ever

Wednesday 22 March 2023

A film festival celebrating the best in independent global and local cinema for its third instalment, which this year will feature elements of virtual reality.

The 13th Parish Festival will return to Jersey Arts Centre from 18 to 21 May.

As well as offering an exciting array of contemporary short films, and documentaries and features of all genres, the four-day festival will also see a Virtual Reality (VR) aspect, a public interview with a distinguished film industry creator, and a DIY filmmaking course.

Several award-winning films, fresh from their screenings at Sundance and Venice Film Festivals, will be featured.

Tony Langlois, Director of 13th Parish Festival, said: "Over recent years, we’ve developed a global festival with local roots and partnerships and this year will be even bigger and better. We really want Jersey to be part of the international film festival circuit, partnering with other territories in this celebration of emerging film."

He added: "We hope the local community will get behind this event, so we can continue to bring excellent independent arts to the island."

In its pitch to get islanders involved, the Off Courts Festival of Trouville team will visit from Normandy to present a week-long filmmaking workshop, open to all. 'Kino Jersey’ is a completely free, five-day course, with experts on hand to help creators take their film from scratch to seeing it produced by the end of the week.

The festival will partner again with Alliance Française de Jersey in bringing in a new French film to the festival, featuring a guest filmmaker. Another partnership with Soroptimist International Jersey will bring in a female guest speaker to spotlight local women who have excelled in the media arts.

This year, the festival will develop further its Jersey Film Showcase which began last year and features short films made by Jersey filmmakers. It offers them the chance to see their work on the big screen, to network and to discuss their filmmaking careers. The deadline for regular entries is 24 March and the late entry deadline is 14 April.

The 13th Parish Film Festival began four years ago, initiated by experienced cinephiles keen to bring a dynamic and creative event to Jersey. The festival showcases new independent films from around the world, but also provides an encouraging and supportive space for the development of local filmmaking.
