LISTEN: Hypnotherapist shares recording to help ease anxiety

Sunday 29 March 2020

A local hypnotherapist has created a free recording to help islanders feel less stressed during the global pandemic.

Jacqui Carrel recommends listening to the recording daily for at least 21 to 30 days while sitting comfortably - but absolutely not when driving.

“My diary is filling up, so I thought the best way to help as many people as I can would be to make a recording for people to download and listen to at home,” she explained.

“It won’t get rid of the virus and related issues, but it will help build emotional and physical resilience.”

In addition to the video, Ms Carrel has shared other tips that could help islanders deal with their corona virus-related worries.

“If you feel more compassion than anger, your own body will respond better,” she explained.

“You cannot change the facts, but you can change the way you feel about them."

While people might find it hard to separate facts from emotions at times like these and start feeling agitated, Ms Carrel has shared a simple tip known as 'square breathing'.

“You breathe in for a count of four, you hold for a count of four, you breathe out for a count of four and you hold that for a count of four.

“You just do that two or three times and then you can separate the facts from feelings.”

Ms Carrel also suggested lying to your brain, explaining that “the mind believes what you tell him”.

“If you think you will fail, you will,” she said. “One other example is with little children, if you tell them do not drop on the stairs with your milk, they most probably will. But if you say, carry your milk properly and walk properly, it will work.”

“The brain believes what you tell him and your subconscious does not know you lie to him. So if you are feeling anxious, tell yourself, ‘I can cope with this, I have phenomenal coping skills, I am brilliant at this.'

“The more you repeat it, it becomes the truth and your whole physiology will change. It’s like a mantra you keep telling yourself. It’s amazing the physical change you see.”
