VIDEO: Man arrested on suspicion of murder

Wednesday 05 April 2017

A man has been arrested on suspicion of murder following the discovery of a middle-aged woman's body at a St Helier flat on Tuesday morning.

Police have confirmed that a 58-year-old man, who was arrested shortly before 15:00, has been remanded in custody and will be interviewed in due course.

It's believed that the victim and the man currently held in custody knew each other. Police are not ruling out that someone else might be involved in the death as the exact circumstances are still unknown. Three other individuals are being treated as "key significant witnesses".

Video: Superintendent Stewart Gull gave a short press conference on the alleged murder.

The murder investigation is ongoing and will be led by Senior Investigating Officer (SIO), DCI Alison Fossey.

A UK Home Office pathologist has also been called to the Island to conduct a post-mortem examination to determine the cause of death.

The family of the victim - who will remain anonymous until members of her extended family are contacted - are now being supported by Specialist Family Liaison Officers.

In the interim, there is no suggestion of risk to the public.

Police attended a flat on the first floor of 10 Victoria Street at 10:49 on Tuesday after a member of the public called the Ambulance Services. It is unclear whether the victim was already dead when the ambulance arrived. Other parties living in the property subsequently attended the scene.

Police are now asking to hear from those who noticed anything unusual in Victoria Street over the last 24 hours. The incident room can be contacted on 01534 612927 or Crimestoppers on 01534 555111.
