Memorial mass for Ana Rebelo to be held this evening

Tuesday 25 April 2017

Relatives and friends of Ana Rebelo, who was found dead in a St Helier flat three weeks ago, will celebrate her life at a memorial mass this evening. So far, no one has been charged in connection with her death.

51-year-old Mrs Rebelo (née Pereira) was found by family members on Tuesday 4 April and was said to have died due to “compression to the neck” by a third party.

A 58-year-old man was arrested on 4 April, but later released on police bail.

Police told Express that they are now pursuing over 166 lines of inquiry as part of their ongoing investigation, which has been codenamed ‘Operation Gable’ and involves a team of over 30 people. Forensic work continues on 243 exhibits, while Police also say that they're analysis passive data sources including mobile phones and social media accounts.

Detective Chief Inspector Alison Fossey, who is leading the investigation, commented: "We remain focussed and committed to establishing how and why Ana met her death and continue to work in support of her family."

But this evening’s mass will focus on commemorating the life of Mrs Rebelo, a popular member of the Portuguese and Catholic community.

According to Monsignor Nicholas France MBE, the mass will include prayers in both English and Portuguese, such as:

“O God, who through the ending of present things open up the beginning of things to come, grant, we pray, that the soul of your servant, Ana, may be led by you to attain the inheritance of eternal redemption. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.”

It will be held at St Thomas’ Church at 18:00, with Mrs Rebelo's husband, daughter, sons and sisters all expected to attend.

While her body has not yet been released, it will later be repatriated to her hometown in Portugal following a successful crowdfunding campaign.

In the interim, Police are still appealing for information, and urge anyone who may know about Mrs Rebelo's last movements to contact them on 612612 or anonymously via Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
