"End of an era" for Troubadour... but a new one beckons

Friday 05 January 2024

A popular Weighbridge pub has closed its doors after a "crazy" party to mark the end of an era as its General Manager retired... but islanders are being reassured that they will be reopening.

Liberation Group, which is partnered with the Troubadour, said that it was only temporarily closed while a replacement for its retiring General Manager is recruited.

Post-punk band 88 BunkFace hosted a gig at the Troubadour last weekend to celebrate the retirement of Noel Flood who managed the venue for almost a decade.

On Friday, they were supported by classic rock band Flashmob and were supported by indie rock group The Reasons on Saturday.

Both gigs were held from 21:00 to 1:00, with the venue receiving a one-off licensing extension.

Guitarist and vocalist Adam True said: “The Friday was busy all night. The Saturday started off quiet, given it was stuck between the Friday and New Year's Eve on the Sunday, but it became absolutely crazy towards the end of the night.”

The venue, formerly known as the Ha’Penny Bridge, was reopened by landlord Noel Flood as a refurbished live music venue in 2015 and partnered with the Jersey-based Liberation Group.

He renamed the pub after a famous Hollywood venue where the likes of James Taylor, Carole King and The Eagles got their start, and where Elton John played his first US gig.

The venue was once a hotel known as The Great Western Hotel, before it became a pub but kept its name throughout the 20th century until it became The Bridge, the Ha’Penny Bridge and finally, the Troubadour.

"Everyone at Liberation Brewing Co would like to wish Noel the General Manager at the Troubadour a happy retirement," a spokesperson for Liberation Group told Express.

A date for the venue to reopen is yet to be confirmed.
