Ports plan to open duty-free shop at harbour

Friday 20 January 2023

A temporary duty-free shop could be installed at the Harbour for the next three years ahead of a large-scale upgrade to the terminal building under plans being put forward by Ports of Jersey.

Currently, passengers travelling on Condor can purchase duty-free products on board the ferry. However, there is no duty-free offering on land at Elizabeth Terminal, unlike Jersey Airport.

According to proposals submitted to the Planning Department, a shipping container would be used to store products for the temporary facility.

The scheme would also include "a discrete and secure unit within the Elizabeth Terminal that would serve as storage for duty-free alcohol and other duty-free products, together with two customer accessible frontages, one for placing orders and product display, with another for collecting purchases after security".

The plans added that a product display and ordering facility would be set up "adjacent to the land-side vehicle lanes situated to the east of the Elizabeth Terminal building and accessible beyond the Condor Ferries check-in desks."

They stated that the facility would remain in place until the completion of the Harbour Master Plan, which is a long-term development plan beginning with the redevelopment of Elizabeth Harbour, before focusing on transforming Albert Pier, La Collette and Victoria Pier, the Old Harbours and La Folie, and New North Quay.

Under initial proposals released in November last year, the Elizabeth Terminal building, which opened in 1989, will be replaced with a more modern building overlooking the sea in the hope of making the harbour "a more attractive place to spend time at".

Those proposals later went out for public consultation, and a Ports of Jersey spokesperson said a report on the response was expected to be published by the end of the month.
