Gorey café's annual fish finger fundraiser nears £40k total

Friday 02 February 2024

A Gorey café owner has raised over £39k for charity over the past six years by selling fish finger sandwiches, sweet treats and knitted chickens – and she is now hoping to surpass the £40k mark by her birthday in mid-March.

Rhona Hewit – the owner of Rhona's at the Beach café – started her annual fish finger sandwich fundraiser in 2018 in memory of a beloved family member.

She has since raised over £39,000 through the initiative, and each year chooses a local charity to benefit from the proceeds.

Rhona said: "The community spirit is incredible in Jersey.

"I wouldn't be able to do this by myself and without the community."

The café raised almost £5,000 for ocean therapy charity Healing Waves in 2022, and more than £6,000 for the Christian charity Grace Trust in 2023

This year, the proceeds will go to the MND Association, a charity supporting people affected by motor neurone disease.

Rhona announced on social media earlier this week that she will also be selling knitted chickens in the run-up to Easter in a push to reach her £40,000 goal before her birthday in mid-March.

In response to the post, many islanders had kind words to say about the owner of one of Jersey’s longest-standing and most loved beach cafés, thanking her for raising so much money for local charities.

Legendary local swimmer Sal Minty-Gravett commented: "You are amazing Rhona. Almost as amazing as your fishfinger sandwiches! Well done!"

Others, including The Butterfly Cafe, offered to donate some creme eggs that Rhona can sell alongside the knitted chickens.
