Cricket team sanctioned for walk-off

A local cricket team has had 10 points stripped from its league total following a walk-off during a match last month.

In a match against St Ouen Springfield on 16 August, it is understood that the Santander team of the Jersey International Royals Cricket Club disagreed with a decision involving a ‘leg before wicket’, which led to them refusing to play and walking off.

Their opponents detailed the scenes at the time on Twitter, saying: “Unbelievable scenes at LQ1. Lbw decision disputed by Royals who have now walked off and refused to play. Game forfeited and awarded to SOS by the umpires!”

They later commented to Express: “We cannot state highly enough the importance of upholding the values of the game, the spirit of cricket. As a club SOS will always adhere to these principles."

The matter was placed under review by the Jersey Cricket Board, which yesterday confirmed to Express yesterday that a decision was made to officially sanction the team.

Of the disciplinary process, the board's CEO, Craig Meredith, said: “I can confirm that disciplinary action has been taken against the club and all players involved in accordance with the Cricket Code of Conduct, Spirit of Cricket and our own Disciplinary Procedure.

"This action has seen Royals being deducted 10 points from their league total.”
