A 'Sarnia sarnie' to help Jersey

Friday 16 December 2022

A Guernsey sandwich bar is encouraging people to pop by for a 'Sarnia Sarnie' today to help those affected by the two recent tragedies in Jersey.

Owner of Addison's, Emma Rhodes, said she was encouraged to act after feeling affected by the wave of grief from Jersey following the Pier Road explosion and the L'Ecume II maritime tragedy, which have together claimed the lives of 12 people.

Ms Rhodes said her thoughts and the thoughts of her staff and customers have been with all of the victims and their loved ones all week.

"So this Friday, any coffee ordered, we will be asking for a donation towards the [Bailiff's] Appeal," she explained.

"Even though this has happened in Jersey we want them to know that we are standing side by side with them."

Flags have been flying at half-mast on the island in solidarity with Jersey, and Guernsey politicians, and the island's Lieutenant-Governor, have shared messages of support.

Guernsey Police have also sent three specialist officers to Jersey to assist with the search and recovery operation underway at the site of the collapsed Haut du Mont flats on Pier Road.
