Shooting stars! More golds for Jersey

Thursday 11 July 2019

Team Jersey have shot back up to the top spot, as this year’s Island Games hurtles towards its hotly anticipated finale in Gibraltar.

Overtaking fellow islanders from the Faroes and the Isle of Man, Jersey has reclaimed its position on top of the podium as the competition’s penultimate day gets underway.

Yesterday, Jersey got into its stride in the men’s athletics events with Elliott Dorey scooping gold in the 5,000m track event and long jumper Ross Jeffs leaping into first place with a distance of 7.23m.

The pool also provided a source of medals for the team: four silvers, three bronze, and a double gold victory from Harry Shalamon, who won the 50m butterfly with a new Jersey record (24.41), and 200m backstroke.

He was also part of the team that took top position in the Men’s 4 100m Medley Relay, alongside William Hodgson, Robert Jones, and Cameron Polak.

After collecting several medals so far in the competition, Gemma Atherley swam to her first gold in the women’s 200m individual medley.

Taking his third first place in the overall contest, Cameron Pirouet won gold in the 50m three position smallbore rifle open.

Nikki Holmes did the island proud with a gold for Jersey in air pistol, meaning she’ll go home with two golds, one silver and one bronze.

“Totally unexpected and totally delighted,” she said in a post on social media.

Jersey has maintained its even spread of medals across their 61-strong haul, with 22 gold, 20 silver and 19 bronze.
