St. Brelade bottle thrower given "strong words of advice"

Saturday 27 June 2020

A 15-year-old girl who was filmed in St. Brelade's Bay throwing a glass bottle onto nearby rocks has been given "strong words of advice" by the police.

The police said the girl was "extremely remorseful and embarrassed about her behaviour."

It comes after a video of her throwing a glass bottle, from what appears to be St. Brelade's Bay Pier onto nearby rocks, as her friends cheer her on, circulated on social media yesterday.

Some shared the footage with the police who announced a few hours earlier they had identified the 15-year-old girl, adding that they would take "appropriate action".

After deleting their first post, they published another one which stated: "We appreciate that the subject of littering, especially now is very emotive and although we understand the feeling surrounding discarded rubbish and broken glass on our beaches, we have decided to delete our previous post to put an end to the huge amount of comments it has attracted.

"We are dealing with the person involved in an appropriate manner."

The force has now confirmed they have spoken to the girl and her parents.

“Strong words of advice were issued and she was extremely remorseful and embarrassed about her behaviour," they said.

"No further police action will be taken and we are satisfied that the young lady involved realises the severity of her actions.”

Many islanders were outraged by the footage in the wake of several littering incidents, one of which saw a young boy needing stitches after slashing his foot at a beach a few weeks ago.

Earlier this week, St. Mary's Honorary Police blasted litterers for leaving broken glass bottles strewn across a coastal beauty spot.

In a Tweet posted last Friday, the voluntary force said: "It is a shame that some people do not respect our beautiful coastline."

Islanders concerned about littering can make a report via LoveJersey, either online or using the app: https://lovejersey.gov.je/reports/home.
