Dozens of jobs are being created in Jersey with the opening of the new Alliance supermarket in the middle of town.

The Channel Islands supermarket group, Alliance, is about to open up shop seven days a week in Sand Street – with 25 new jobs on offer.

Work has been going on all summer to fit out the store that cost the food retailer over £2 million to buy on the former Bissons and Horseplay site.

No one knows yet when the store will officially open but when it does it will be selling Tesco-branded products.

Their slogan says “Every little helps” and branching out into Jersey should be a little help to the world’s second-largest retailer that's battling to turn around a disastrous year of dropping sales.

The products are already selling well in Alliance’s Guernsey store.

Alliance’s Managing Director Andrew Bagot said: “We know from our experience in Guernsey, where we have been selling the full Tesco range, that Channel Island customers are very keen on these products.

“We think that it’s a great time to be investing in retail and creating jobs in Jersey – that’s why we’re confident about what we’re doing.”

The company has planning permission for a second store costing £30 million on the Ann Street site and work is due to start on it next summer.

Mr Bagot said: “Ultimately, we’re planning to bring some much-needed competition to the food retail sector – something that various reports have called for over the years – and to put money back into peoples’ pockets.”

Alliance used to run a Cash & Carry at Grève d'Azette in St Clement and currently sell the Cook range in the Island.
