Fireworks, fairies, Father Christmas and a twinkling Petit Train were amongst the delights greeting yuletide merrymakers as the Christmas lights were switched on last night, kickstarting the Fête dé Noué’s eighteenth year.

Islanders wrapped up warmly and braced temperatures of 11 degrees in a bid to catch a glimpse of the seasonal action in the Royal Square where the big event took place.

But the big switch-on wasn’t the only excitement on offer.

Santa and his Crimbo crew started the party at Millennium Park. They marched through the town centre, lit up the Square and wandered on down to the Weighbridge where they were greeted by a towering light tree.

Back in the centre, First Tower Primary School treated the crowds to wintery tunes.

For those not equipped with mince pies, dancers provided a treat for the eyes instead.

The biggest treat, however, were the glittering fireworks and storm of confetti that rained down after a Christmas countdown by Deputy Murray Norton.

Constable Simon Crowcroft went so far as to tweet that this switch-on had been the “best ever.”

As the season goes on, islanders will have the chance to sample treats at a series of Christmas markets ranging from French-themed in town to one located in the War Tunnels.

Ice skating is finally set to return to the Fort, which comes as part of a wider ‘Festive Fort’ experience, including a special Elf Workshop.

Of course, the Fête dé Noué season wouldn’t be complete without island favourite, the Winter Battle of Flowers.
