WATCH: First look inside the Nightingale hospital…

A video update from the Chief Minister has offered a first glimpse inside the new Nightingale field hospital, which he suggested could take Guernsey patients if the island reaches out for help.

Stating that he had been asked whether the Millbrook-based facility could provide additional capacity for Jersey's neighbouring island, Senator John Le Fondré said: "Our Health and Community Services Department works very closely with our colleagues in Guernsey regarding our response tothe virus, and we're always happy to work with our island neighbours, as they are with us."

The comments came following a visit to the 180-bed build yesterday with the Bailiff and Lieutenant Governor.

The Chief Minister explained that the size of the field hospital was based on modelling of how covid-19 could spread throughout the island over the next four to six months.

He emphasised that it will only be used if the Jersey General Hospital - where there are currently 14 virus patients - reaches capacity.

Describing the construction work as "phenomenal", Senator Le Fondré went on to express "heartfelt thanks" to all workers involved in the project, for whom he said he and his fellow visitors had the "utmost respect".

"The work they are doing will save lives."
