The first official King’s Representative in over 70 years was officially sworn in on Saturday.

Vice-Admiral Jerry Kyd became the island’s 63rd Lieutenant-Governor and the first from the Royal Navy in 32 years.

The 55-year-old will represent His Majesty in the Bailiwick in a role that is both diplomatic and ceremonial.

The latter was very much on display on Saturday, with Vice-Admiral Kyd, taking his Oath of Office in the Royal Court before he took the salute at a parade in the Royal Square.

Uniformed services on parade included a guard of honour from HMS Iron Duke, with bayonets fixed; the crew of HMS Severn, which was visiting the island; the Jersey Field Squadron, veterans and cadet organisations.

A Royal Navy Wildcat helicopter also flew overhead.

They were led by a Band of the Royal Marines, who remained after the parade to perform for the public. Meanwhile, a service of dedication took place in the Town Church.

Vice-Admiral Kyd retired from the Royal Navy in March after 37 years of service. His last role was Fleet Commander and Chief Naval Warfare Officer of the Senior Service, responsible for the operation, resourcing and training of all vessels and aircraft of the Navy.

Previously, Vice-Admiral Kyd commanded the Royal Navy’s flagship, HMS Queen Elizabeth, and the UK’s Carrier Strike Group.

He replaced Air Chief Marshal Sir Stephen Dalton, who left the island in June.

Vice-Admiral Kyd will serve for the next five years.
