READER LETTER: "An opportunity to end the march of executive power, political dithering and weakness"

Friday 06 November 2020

With only a few days before the States Assembly debate a vote of no confidence against the Chief Minister in the wake of a bitter row over the Government CEO's second job at UK real estate firm, a reader, Tom Binet, has submitted this letter to Express.

"It is clear from social media, the press and the many people with whom I have contact, that trust and confidence in Jersey’s Government is now lower than it has been since any time I can remember.

For many months, a large and increasing number of Jersey people have been desperate to see their island return to a well-managed democratic process, guided by decency and good values, where States Members make the decisions and civil servants implement them.

This is what Government was mandated to do as part of the States of Jersey Law 2005:

‘’AND WHEREAS Jersey wishes to advance and promote democratic, accountable and responsive governance in the island and implement fair, effective and efficient policies, in accordance with the international principles of human rights."

On Tuesday 10 November, every Jersey politician will have an opportunity to end the march of executive power, political dithering and weakness, and install new, positive leadership.

Particularly in light of recent events, it is vital that States Members seize the opportunity, do the right thing by their parishioners and constituents and support the vote of no confidence.

It is also imperative that every Jersey resident interested in good governance, lobbies as many Deputies, Constables and Senators as they can, before the vote on Tuesday, to remind them of the public mood and to encourage their support for the proposition."
