Flight funding to help Jersey snooker prodigy on trophy mission

Sunday 07 July 2024

A 10-year-old snooker prodigy is one of latest beneficiaries of a programme which has recently donated 300 free flights worth over £25,000 to islanders and local charities.

Launched in 2019, the Blue Islands initiative enables Channel Islanders to pursue ambitions and opportunities that may not be possible without the support of free flights.

One of the recipients of the most recent round of funding is Archie Greier, a 10-year-old student at Samarès School.

Archie is a gifted snooker player who regularly plays in UK tournaments, often winning against competitors up to twice his age.

He found out that he had become a flight fund beneficiary after winning the under-21 bronze championship in Swindon in May.

Archie said: “I'm so happy that I finished off the snooker season with a victory.

I've won three Cuestars tournaments now and hoping to win more when it starts again in September.

I now move up to silver level having been bronze level for just over a year, and with flight funding support from Blue Islands, I can enter many more events and hopefully get more experience and bring back more trophies to Jersey.”

Blue Islands CEO Rob Veron said: “From sport, charities, art and personal enrichment, there was an incredible range of aspirations showcased in a record number of applications which is testament to the amazing talent, dedication and passion of Channel Islanders.

“From year-round connectivity to flight funding, we’re proud to play our part in supporting our Channel Islands community to take opportunities to achieve their goals.

We look forward to sharing the wonderful achievements of Archie and many of our other beneficiaries over the coming months.”
