Residents of the area had raised concerns about the number of large vehicles mounting the footpath, and the resultant risks to pedestrian safety, so a width restriction will be trialled for between nine and 12 months, as is required in legislation.

From next week, vehicles more than 1.82 metres (six feet) in width will not be permitted to drive through Belmont Road, except for access to premises in the road.

Road Safety Officer, Rex Williams, said: “During the past few years Belmont Road, which is a narrow residential road, has become an increasingly busy route for large vehicles.

“This has led to concerns from local residents regarding the safety of pedestrians, including children and parents walking to nearby schools, and also from pedestrians using the route to walk to and from Town.”

Drivers are also reminded that vehicles more than 6 feet wide are currently not permitted to park in the parking spaces along Belmont Road.
