Most people associate pantomimes with Christmas, but people in Guernsey will soon have the chance to see one out of season – with a twist.
Music Theatre Guernsey (MTG) is putting on an “adult phantom-ime” – an 18s-and-over pantomime – combining smut and horror for audiences at the Fermaine Tavern this Halloween.
Writer and director Darren Alderton said the show, ‘I Know Who You did Last Summer’, is his “baby”.
The production is loosely based on the 90s horror flick ‘I Know What You Did Last Summer‘, starring Sarah Michelle Gellar and Jennifer Love Hewitt, which was chosen because of its nautical theme.
Mr Alderton said: “The best pantomimes are written locally and take in everything that’s going on.”
So audiences can expect quips about sea-swimming in sewage and chip shops taking over the island.
He said that, as a culture, we “have forgotten what pantomime actually is – we’ve forgotten about the comedy and the slapstick and the political satire”.
While a pantomime is usually associated with Christmas, Mr Alderton said he’s keen to reinvigorate a pantomime culture that is true to its roots.
The cast, who are all experienced pantomime actors, are already in rehearsals and Mr Alderton said they “can’t wait” to welcome the missing character – the audience.
“The audience, so we always say, are the final missing character. You desperately need them to play their part for us to be able to play ours,” Mr Alderton said.
He added: “The older you get the more you’ll love it, for sure. And the more local you are the more you’ll love it.
“If you just want a great night out in these dark times, that is exactly what it is – it’s a good way to spend Halloween.”
‘I Know Who You did Last Summer’ will run for 8 performances between 22 and 31 October.
