Elina Sloka has been fined £500 and taken off the roads for a year after she was found to be over the limit in the early hours of Friday 24 April.

Crown Advocate Fiona Russell told the Court that police followed a black BMW, driven by Sloka, along the North Esplanade.

“They noticed the standard of driving was poor and the vehicle was swerving from side to side,” she said. “The road conditions were dry and there we no other vehicles on the road.”

The car was pulled over and Sloka was breath tested. She was found to have 49 micrograms of alcohol per 100 millilitres of breath (the legal limit is 35).

She was arrested and a blood test of 98mg of alcohol per 100ml of blood confirmed that Sloka was over the limit. 

Judge Graeme McKerrell said Sloka’s reading was at the bottom end of what is usually dealt with by the Magistrates’ Court.

“But that does not reduce the fact that any drink driving offence is a serious one,” he said. 

“You are a person of previously good character, however it was by luck rather than judgement that no one was injuried and that accident did not occur.

“This is not a matter that should be clogging up the courts at this time and law enforcement have other stuff to be doing in the current situation.”
