BEYOND THE BEES

Wild Islands Film Collective are premiering their new film “Pollinators Great and Small” at the Princess Royal Centre for Performing Arts on Saturday 18th April at 7pm!

The film was shot, produced, and directed locally by Wild Islands in Guernsey and Sark and is our second local film after “The Blue”.  From the tiny furrow bee emerging in spring, to hoverflies drifting across our hedgerows, and moths working the night shift, pollinators are everywhere.

Narrated by Dr Miranda Bane from the Pollinator Project and Liz Sweet, The Guernsey Scientist, the film tells the story of a very special bee, explores the hidden world of pollinating insects, their importance to our islands and our modern lives today.

There are 3 shows, Saturday 18th April 7-9pm, Sunday 7-9pm plus a free matinée for families on the Sunday 19th April 2-4pm. Tickets can be booked through the Princess Royal Performing Arts Centre and are priced at £10 for adults and £7.50 for children and students for the evening shows.

All tickets booked for the 3 showings on the 18th and 19th April including the free Sunday family’s matinée will be entered in a prize draw to win a trip for 2 to London.

ABOUT THE BOOK

Eluned Hughes is stuck. It’s 1984 in a valley in south Wales: the miners’ strike is ravaging her community; her sister’s swanned off with a Thatcherite policeman; and her boyfriend Lloyd keeps bringing up marriage. And if they play ’99 Red Balloons’ on the radio one more time, she might just lose her mind.

Then the fundraising group Lesbians and Gays Support the Miners comes down from London, and she meets June, a snaggle-toothed blonde in a too-big leather jacket. Suddenly, Eluned isn’t stuck any more – she’s in freefall.

June’s an artist and an activist. With June, Eluned can imagine a completely different life for herself. But as her family struggles with the strike, and her relationship with her sister deteriorates, should she really leave it all behind?

Museum After Hours: “Well and cleanly harnyssed”

Museum ‘After Hours’ is back with a fascinating talk by local historian, Callum Tostevin‑Hall!

Join us at Guernsey Museum at Candie for an interesting exploration into how artists and their patrons in the 15th and early 16th centuries used the visual language of plate armour to shape depictions of Saint George, the iconic warrior saint.

Callum Tostevin‑Hall will guide audiences through three key archetypes, showing how real armour influenced the way this celebrated figure was imagined in art.

This lecture will take place in the Frossard Theatre within Guernsey Museum at Candie, next Thursday the 23rd April from 6pm.

Tickets are £5 (Pay on the Door), or free for students and Discovery Pass Holders.

Reserve your space via Eventbrite today!
