The WILLIAM MORRIS COLLECTIVE: An Evening with Suzanne Fagence Cooper
Discover the world of William Morris next Wednesday the 7th of October, with this evening lecture from renowned author, curator and lecturer Suzanne Fagence Cooper.
The designs of William Morris abound with greenery and growing things. Orchards, hedgerows, kitchen gardens and wild woodlands all provided inspiration for his art and lectures.
Throughout his life, Morris sought ways to connect domestic spaces with the natural world and his gardens. Together with his family, he created beautiful decorative patterns inspired by honeysuckle, apple blossom and roses. Their creativity was underpinned by a deep appreciation of nature and an awareness of its fragility.
In his lecture, Art and the Beauty of the Earth, William Morris urged audiences to take responsibility for protecting the environment. He believed that artists should lead the way as advocates and activists for the natural world.
This September, the William Morris Collective will celebrate its launch and first exhibition, Radical Beauty at St Stephen’s Church. To mark the occasion, renowned author, curator and lecturer Suzanne Fagence Cooper will join us on 7 October for a special talk exploring William Morris’s life, work and enduring environmental ideals. Drawing on her extensive research and experience curating Morris-related exhibitions, Suzanne will offer fresh insights into one of Britain’s most influential artists and thinkers.
The lecture will take place in the Frossard Theatre within Candie Museum, starting at 7pm and running until 9pm.

Art at the Park: ‘The Stillness of Place’ by Wendy Griffin
The National Trust of Guernsey’s Art at the Park Gallery in Saumarez Park is gearing up for the next showcase… Wendy Griffin’s new art exhibition, ‘The Stillness of Place’, opening next Tuesday the 6th of October.
Wendy’s landscapes and seascapes are beautifully serene evoking long summers and crisp cold winters. Using oil paints as well as pastels, Wendy’s mastery of both media results in wonderful scenes typical of the Guernsey we all know and love.
The exhibition runs from Tuesday the 6th of October until Friday the 30th of October between 10am and 5pm daily, but please be aware that the exhibition will close at 2pm on the final day. The Gallery is free entry and is accessible friendly.
Wendy Griffin is a Guernsey based artist whose work explores the quiet beauty and enduring character of the Island’s landscapes and coastline, and also the places she visits regularly in the UK. Working in oils and pastels, whether “en plein air” or in the studio, she is drawn to places that invite stillness, quiet bays, winding coastal paths, open skies, and the ever-changing meeting of land and sea.
Her work explores the emotional connection we form with the places around us. Rather than simply recording a view, she seeks to capture a sense of atmosphere, memory and presence: those moments when a landscape seems to hold a feeling, a story, or a moment of peace. Through expressive colour, texture, and light, Wendy’s paintings reflect both the tranquillity and the power of the natural world whether depicting calm waters or restless seas, her work is rooted in a belief that places can comfort, restore and connect us to something larger than ourselves.
In addition to Wendy’s paintings there will be a small display of her late Father’s watercolours. Tony Taylor was a well-known local artist and teacher of watercolour who held many local exhibitions in the island, and whose work is held in private collections both locally and afar. All proceeds from any sales of his paintings will be given to the Stroke Association.
