“We appreciate this generosity from your island. We will never forget who our friends are in life????”
Islanders have continued to raise funds and show support to Ukraine as the war continues.
St Peter Port Douzenier Evita Bormane said: “You don’t need to question why you should help; you just know you have to help.”
Ms Bormane, who is originally from Latvia, and her co-worker, Odette Quintal, from Bouche by Muse, baked over 100 donuts in the colours of the Ukrainian flag to raise funds and awareness.

“Odette and I knew that we wanted to do something to help. With all the horrible things happening in Ukraine you don’t need to question why you should help; you just know you have to help,” she said.
“The war in Ukraine is very close to my heart because when I was born in Latvia, we were all part of the Soviet Union.
“We baked the donuts to sell at Bouche to raise awareness and also raise funds for this important cause.”

Ms Bormane said she had been encouraged by the outpouring of support locally.
“I think it’s fantastic that Castle Cornet was lit up in the Ukranian colours, and Torteval Church too.
“I even saw Shiloh Church had been painted in the colours of the Ukrainian flag.”
Shiloh Church was painted by the congregation on Sunday in place of their usual Sunday service.

Shiloh Church Team Leader Chrissy Salmon said the group wanted to do something to show they stand with Ukraine.
“We have all been really heartbroken and saddened by the images coming from Ukraine,” she said.
“We have made financial donations to support Ukraine and we have been praying for peace, but we wanted to do something to show that we stand with Ukraine.”
Mrs Salmon said it took approximately 40 volunteers 40 minutes to paint the church on Sunday.
“We have all been feeling quite helpless so we decided to paint the Church instead of our normal service.
“The younger people in the group in particular have been encouraged by doing the painting and feeling like they have done something to have a positive impact,” she said.

The States of Alderney have also joined efforts of support in the Bailiwick by launching a Ukraine Appeal.
The States of Alderney will match local contributions on a pound for pound basis up to a maximum of £15,000 and the Island Hall will be lit in the Ukrainian colours.
States of Alderney President William Tate said the appeal is particularly poignant as Alderney residents were evacuated during World War II.
“As a community we know only too well the devastating impact of having to leave your home and all you hold dear at a moment’s notice,” he said.
“Events unfolding in Ukraine are a particularly powerful reminder to our homecoming community in the dark days of June 1940.”

Mr Tate said islanders were keen to show their support.
“We have a strong sense of the impact on the thousands of hardworking people who had been trying to flee the carnage and find safe haven in neighbouring countries,” he said.
“We stand shoulder to shoulder with them and want to show our support in a practical way by providing financial assistance to be distributed by the humanitarian relief agencies.
“I am sure that, as an island, we will respond to the call to show our unwavering support as always.
“We should never forget the sacrifices made by millions over hundreds of years to ensure that freedom and democracy are inalienable rights in a free society.
“We cannot allow that light to be extinguished in Ukraine.”
