Storm Goretti dominated the headlines this week – but once you look past the weather, these were the stories that really got people talking…
From drug markets quietly shifting under our feet to hard questions about pay, power and policing, here are the five most-read stories on Express (storm coverage aside – which you can catch up on here)…
1. From prescription to prison
A 20-year-old jailed for selling multiple strains of medicinal cannabis recently became the latest flashpoint in what CI authorities say is a quiet but profound shift in the islands’ drugs trade…
2. Shut out of the skies…
Loganair delivered a blunt verdict after it emerged it was being locked out of Guernsey’s air routes. While the news was apparently no surprise, the airline said that it was “disappointed not to be able to serve the Guernsey community” following the failed bid that’s left big questions hanging over competition and connectivity…
3. Court orders watchdog rethink on honesty and punishment
The Royal Court largely sided with Guernsey’s financial regulator in a recent high-stakes enforcement case – but stopped short of a full endorsement, ordering the GFSC to revisit key findings and penalties after identifying errors of law.
It was the second recent instance in which the GFSC had been officially asked for a rethink, following another case involving a senior fund manager who was banned from working in the finance sector after misdemeanours related to a diamond-backed loan deal.
4. Dangerous driving
Police were appealing for witnesses after reports that a vehicle was driven dangerously through St Peter Port, with pedestrians and other road users believed to have been nearby at the time.
5. The States pay gap in numbers
New figures revealed that almost 400 States of Guernsey employees earn at least twice the island’s median salary, reigniting debate about pay, public sector growth and value for money.
