A local secondary school is up for a highly competitive award, following the creation of a mental health and wellbeing space for students.
Blanchelande College has been shortlisted for a 2026 Independent Schools Association (ISA) Award, recognising its proactive, whole-school approach to pupil wellbeing, belonging and inclusion through its Emmaus Space, launched in September 2025.
Dr Vanessa Mitchell, Vice Principal, said: “I am incredibly proud of the provision we have created through the Emmaus space.
“We have always been committed to providing excellent support for our pupils, but Emmaus Space has allowed us to take a proactive approach by identifying needs early, building connection and helping pupils before challenges become barriers.”
The Space is a dedicated wellbeing space where children can start their day in a regulated way.
It combines emotional regulation, early intervention, pupil leadership, staff development and family support.
The ISA said it was “particularly impressed” by the work around the Emmaus Space.
Since launching, it has improved attendance, student wellbeing and reduced barriers to enter education.
Dr Mitchell added: “It is wonderful to see our wellbeing provision recognised through this ISA shortlist, particularly given the strength of competition from schools across the UK.
“The real achievement, however, is seeing the Emmaus Space become part of the wider culture of Blanchelande College and knowing that our pupils, families and staff are benefitting from it every day.”
This year’s ISA awards are one of the most competitive to date, with the highest number of nominations received.
The 2026 ISA Award winners will be announced at the ISA Autumn Conference in November.
